I've recently been using Photoshot to create an image that consists of the same style as David Carson. To do this we found a image (of fruit- in my case) and used the following techniques to transform an image such as this: à
Into one like this:
The process is actually very simple, after importing the image in photoshop you right-click on the layer that contains the photo and click "Duplicate Layer". This is done as if you accidently do something wrong and can not undo, you're able to redo your work...
Next hide the Copied image by clicking the eye on the left of that layer, before going to Adustments (along the top of the screen) and clicking 'Desaturate'. Now go to Filter and filter menu. Select Stylize and then find edges...
Go back to the Adustments menu and click Brightness and contrast- changing the settings if needed- and ensuring the Use Legacy box is checked thus removing the unececary detail.
Finally use the paintbrush tool to remove more detail if you so wish.
By now your image should look somewhat similar to the second one I showed you.
