Rest in Peace- It allowed

I found an image by Neville Brody which looked exteremely unique, and seemed to consist of layers and layers of text piled ontop of one another. Therefore I dicided to try and recreate it.











The original- by Neville Brody- looked like this:






So in order to recreate the image I first needed to write the bottom layer of text, after several minutes I had done this:

Next I had to recreate some of the bolder, more noticable text as seen in Neville Brody's image.
So I made several new layers which read 'Rest in Peace'.












I then noticed how bland my remake looked in comparison to Neville Brody's thus I included several more layers, that consisted of different; colours, shapes and sizes. I used the Warp and Free Transform (CTRL+T) tools in order to do so. Causing the final image to look like this:

Text photo

This image took alot of work, using a variety of techniques! The final outcome was as follows:

In order to make this, I first collected an image of my family, here it is:

Next I used the Pen tool to remove the background- which left the photo looking like this:

Next I used effects such as Shadows, midtones and colour range which resulted in the image having this appearence:

 

I then duplicated the layer, adding a 50% gray effect to one, and a solid black to the other.



Therefore the image then looked like this:

 

Before long I wrote my text and used brush define to create a brush in the shape of my text:

 

 

 

 

This meant I could create a new layer and paste the brush over the top of my photo, before using the Gradient tool to give the text an almost rainbow texture. Next I used the 'Copy  Layer Style' and 'Paste layer Style' option to give both the text and photo itself a similar appearance.

 

Finally (after merging a few layers) I used the Path -created in step 2- to create a 'Layer Mask' which removed the text on the outside of the picture. Thus completing the image...  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 





Do not be satisfied

When researching David Carson's work I came across:

Do Not Be Satisfied. This piece- in my eyes- was absolutely great, especially with the overlaying texture. I therefore dicided to re-make it, but with a photo of my Grandad replacing the man seen on the right.


First I found a texture from the intenet what was somewhat similar to the one in the image above- this is what I found:

I then changed the colour and appearance of the texture using a variaty of settings/ tools, including:
-Hue and Saturation
-Levels
-Brightness and Contrast
-Colour Balance
-Curves

Eventually, after 10-15 minutes of tweaking I was happy with what I had. I then used file>Place to insert a picture of my Grandad before useing the pen tool to remove the background of the image, leaving only the image of my Grandad.

Next I used the same method and tools as before on my Grandad to give his a similar appearance as the background, the outcome was as follows:


Happy with what I had so far, I moved onto the text. Whilst studying the image by David Carson further, I realised that his text had a slight glow and blur therefore I tried this with the word 'Peace'.


Each of the words on the right, consisted of a different effect, such as:
-Box Blur
-Lens Blur
-Outer Glow
-Motion Blur
-Gaussian Blur




I then incorparated some of these effects into my work by writing the words 'Rest in Peace' with these effects ontop of the image I created previously. Another effective technique I used was Layer Mask. This allowed me to hide some of the text behind the image of my Grandad giving the image as a whole alot more deapth and making it look more 3D.

Before long I repeated the words and used similar techniques as beofre to use up some of the empty space...

My Grandad- Michael Laver

On the 16th of Febuary 2013, my grandad passes away. As you would expect I couldn't get over it, I genually felt as though the world was falling apart around me. There must have been at least a week (of absolute distress) pass before things changed.

Whilst at the funeral I realised something, I was told one paragraph that changed everything, and that was: "You can be upset that he's gone, that you can't spend any of those times again. Or you could be glad that he was here, and you got to spend those times together."

Never before had I thought about it like that! I felt so proud of my grandad as those words hit my ears, so thankful for the oppertunities and the chances I got to spend and enjoy time with him... I think of those words even now, they give he confidence, courage.

Words can not express how thankful I am, for so many things:
-to have spent those times together, with my grandad
-to have friends and family that helped me through those times of trouble
- and (most importantly) to have those words remind me of what it means to be the grandson of Michael Laver.

Refienment- My Grandad

To begin with I used the Pen tool to cut out the background, leaving just the body of my Grandad.












 I then created a solid black rectangle and used Hard Mix to overlay it, creating a solid black sihluette.











 Finally I duplicated the orgignal photo, put it on
the top and turned down the oppacity. This created a detailed shilouette- as you can see:

My attempt at remaking Neville Brody's Ocean 12

Upon finding Neville Brody's Ocean 12, I decided to try and re-make his work in his style. His image can be seen below- consisting of a number of silhouette's (and shadows) stood on top of a number 11 which is written on the floor. Next to this image a somewhat similar graphic can be found. This time from a 'bird's eye' point of view and with a number 12 replacing the number 11 from the previous image...

In my recreation (which is only half complete) I've tried to include some silhouette's of my own, once again with their own shadows. To start with I used a solid grey for the shadows before realising that using a simple techinque -which is oppacity- looks considerably better. All I did was copied the image before using CTRL + T (free transform) to streach it out thus giving it a more shadow like appierance. Then I would change the oppacity to roughly 30% to give it more deapth. Thankfully this turned out great giving it a very realistic, life like look!

I do not , however, like how the number 11 turned out as -unlike in Neville Brody's work- it doesn't look very  flat. Instead it looks as though it's just been written over the top of a white canvas... For this reason I'm going to play around with this in the hope that I can give it a look similar to that of Neville Brody before continuing ans re-making the 12 section of the image.
